The Belated Christmas & Almost New Year Party
Sunday, December 30th, 200712.30.07. For the second time, I organized a post-Christmas/pre-New year’s day get-together with my college friends. There have been some changes in this year’s celebration though:
First, we had dinner not in a restaurant but we opted to make home cook meals (almost gourmet!) at Rodel’s pad in Gen. Trias. Although originally, the plan was to have dinner in a nice restaurant outside Cavite on the 29th, Jhoy made a suggestion to just have a house party while Rodel requested to have the scheduled move the next day. Rodel was a willing host and although we didn’t have much preparation for the menu, we were able to pull it off—from buying the ingredients, getting dirty in the kitchen, cooking and presenting the food ala professional chefs. Menu consisted of carbonara( minus the fettuccini pasta because we couldn’t find one in the local grocery store), deviled eggs(which is now my specialty hors d’oeuvres), fried chicken and shanghai rolls(not really the hardest thing to cook), pork teriyaki and sisig (Rodel’s special dishes). As the host and the party connoisseur, Rodel took charge of the booze supply that night with great hopes that he’ll get everyone drunk—among us, it was only Judie who complied. I was the DJ of the night, providing most of the music from my iPod.
Second, a lot of changes happened among my circle of friends this year. A quick review— the ‘Jane-Lauro-who-would-have-thought-it-will-happen’ split up, Lauro-Sheena-Jhing-Wewe now working abroad, Gladys’s break up with Jake, and Rodel’s issues with his ex(both bestfriend and special someone). Obviously, a lot of people present from last year’s dinner at Rosaliz are not around this time. Filling up their positions are Jess and Jayson who are dear friends as well to us in college. While Rodel surprised us that he invited some of his friends along, which somehow broke our expectation of spending more time with a missed friend since he’s been very active in his ‘social life’ the past few months.
Lastly, a noticeable change was the gift giving (which I hope will become a tradition in the coming years). Everyone has a gift for everyone this year. I got a coffee mug from Judie, a Bench underwear from Jane, a giraffe mini-stuffed toy/keychain from Glads, a cookie glass jar from Jhoy and a puppy stuffed toy/cellphone holder form Rodel while Anne’s gift she said, is to follow . Modesty aside, I made the best effort to wrap my gift using old magazine pages with silver ribbons. For our friends abroad, they received our gift earlier this year—a thoughtful Christmas card signed by each of us. We also made a phonecall to my cousin Sheena around 10:30pm and we all were able to spend 10-20 seconds of talk time with her. It’s probably the most we can do to cheer her up this holiday season. We are still waiting for their gift packages to come although none of them have mentioned they packed one or am I just assuming.
We stayed overnight and slept at Rodel’s room (the six of us—Rodel’s not even sleeping in his own room). Some of the best conversations I had I my life happen on that room. We went home, having very little sleep but plentiful memories to conclude this year.
It’s almost New Year, 2008 is going to be our year (for most of us born on the Year of the Rat) so we have high hopes.
I’d like to take this chance to thank everyone who has shared wonderful memories with me in 2007 and cheers to you all in 2008!
